Removing Dental Amalgams is the cornerstone to holistic, biological dentistry (often called homeopathic dentistry or biocompatible dentistry as well)

Many dental doctors support dental amalgams because they are very cost-effective and provide a durable solution without any complications involved in using or handling them. Dental porcelains are not a very good substitute because they are very expensive. Modern composite materials are stronger and provide almost the same durability, but clinical trials have proven that they are no better than dental amalgams as far as the side effects are concerned. The plastic chemicals like bisphenol A, which is used in producing composite resins disrupt the hormonal balance, particularly estrogen by mimicking this hormone. In fact, more concrete and stronger evidence of side effects from composite resins was observed during the subclinical trials than the toxic effects of dental amalgam.

The dentists who are against the use of amalgam for dental filling point out the issues related to toxicity, water contamination and environmental damage. The environment-related issues really create serious concerns because the waste-disposal protocols are not followed in many countries, including the United States while disposing residual mercury after a dental filling. According to a report from WHO, almost 53 percent mercury emissions in the environment are caused by the amalgams and other laboratory devices in the United Kingdom. Dental amalgams are accountable for about one-third of mercury waste in the public sewer system. This mercury load can be significantly reduced by using separators, but many states in the United States are not bound to use separators for reducing mercury.

A poll conducted by Zogby involving 2,590 adult Americans in 2006, reported that almost 72 percent respondents were not aware regarding the presence of mercury in dental amalgam, and almost 92 respondents preferred to be informed about the use of mercury before a filling was done. During the FDA consumer study in 1993, 50 percent participants believed that direct exposure to mercury really caused toxic effects. These findings support the issue raised by some dentists and members of the FDA's Dental Products Panel that consumers should have a right to be informed about mercury or any toxic ingredient when they receive treatments using such materials.

However, the issue of mercury exposure from dental amalgam and outright public ignorance was highlighted in the CBS news program titled 60 Minutes. The nation wise scare caused by the program forced the government to fund additional research on toxic effects from dental amalgam. The issue was somehow managed when Consumer Reports in the following month highlighted the inaccurate reporting during this broadcast and unpreparedness of ADA spokesperson for defending the claims.

The findings of the Freiburg University Institute for Environmental Medicine published in 2005 really pose a very serious concern on this issue. According to the review, direct exposure of mercury from dental amalgam can trigger autoimmunity, autism, nephrotoxicity, oxidative stress, neurobehavioral changes, skin and mucosa alterations and many other toxic effects specific to the individuals. They also observed that the use of dental amalgam caused multiple sclerosis or Alzheimer’s disease in some patients, regardless of the low exposure of mercury. These chronic problems and serious complications reversed in many patients when the dental amalgam was permanently removed.

Homeopathic Dental Remedies

Some people may be familiar with the above information on holistic dentistry, but how many of us are familiar with homeopathic remedies for dental issues?

The definition of homeopathic, according to merriam-webster.com, is “the treatment of disease by minute doses of natural substances that in a healthy person would produce symptoms of disease”.

Think of it like allergy immunotherapy, where you receive small amounts of the substance you are allergic to in order to build up a tolerance.

According to top rated San Diego Dentist, Dr. Woods, when using homeopathic therapies here are some basic rules to follow:

  • Do not touch pellets with hands when administering
  • No food 20 minute before or after taking
  • Place pellets under tongue to dissolve
  • Coffee, tea or mint should not be ingested when taking therapies as they can neutral effectiveness

There are specific substances that are recommended for specific conditions as related to dentistry. Below is a list of some of those substances and the disorder or condition they are used to treat.

Sometimes you need help before you even get to the dentist. We are talking about severe anxiety associated with dental office visits that many people experience with severe reactions. Therapy for those types of issues is listed below as well.

Gelsemium is a flowering plant that can be used to combat the anxiety and “weak knees” feeling, sleepiness, nausea or diarrhea that accompany trips to the dentist. It is recommended to take 3 pellets both the night before and the morning of the appointment, with an additional 3 being taken about 45 minutes prior to your appointment time.

Hypericum is a flowering plant that works well for toothaches, soreness from dentures, post-op situations and inflammation.

Arnica is great for inflammation like swelling after dental procedures, injections, and gum surgery. It can help after tooth extractions and if you are experiencing any soreness or tenderness from your new dentures. Using a Potency 30C, take 3-5 pellets every 20 minutes until you experience relief of symptoms.

Belladonna can be taken for a sudden symptoms related to dental abscesses, especially those accompanied by inflammations and throbbing. Take 3-5 pellets (Potency 6C) every 30 to 60 minutes until the pain and swelling are resolved.

Magnesia phosphoric is for toothaches that are exacerbated by hot and cold drinks or food. Take Potency 9C pellets in doses of 5 pellets every 30 minutes until symptoms subside.

Belladonna can be used when the pain is of the throbbing variety and movement or touch worsens it. You can take 3 pellets every 30-60 minutes until pain recedes.

Coffee cruda is particularly effective for toothaches where the pain is worse when the tooth is exposed to heat but is relieved by cold and you can take 3 pellets every 30 minutes with Potency 9C pellet.

Camomilla is effective for teeth that have not erupted yet and for children who are particularly fussy and needy during teething. Using Potency 12C, give 3 pellets every 30-60 minutes until child gets relief.

Hypericum can be used when nerve pain is felt to accompany teething and the child can be given 5 pellets every 30 minutes until they experience relief.
